CCI-LEX - About Edmonton
CCI-LEX's Home City
Edmonton is the capital city of the province of Alberta, in Canada. Situated on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River, it is approximately 3 hours away from the Rocky Mountains. The population of the Greater Edmonton area is close to a million people.
We are one of the sunniest cities in Canada. Temperatures in June, July and August average about 22 degrees Celsius, and in January and February, the coldest months, temperatures average about -18 degrees Celsius.
Edmonton is known as the "Festival City", because it hosts festivals year-round. Heritage Days (a celebration of Edmonton's multicultural community), The Fringe (theatre), the Edmonton Folk Music Festival, Dreamspeakers (aboriginal), Cariwest (music and dancing from the Caribbean), and the Local Heroes Film Festival are just a few.
We have world class shopping, and boast the world's largest indoor mall (West Edmonton Mall), which includes theatres, a waterpark, a hotel, many nightclubs, and an amusement park. Whyte Avenue is a vibrant shopping district, with many unique shops and nightclubs featuring live music or karaoke.
Sports teams abound. We are home to the Edmonton Oilers (hockey) and the Edmonton Eskimos (football). Edmonton recently hosted the Junior Girls' Soccer Tournament and the Pan-Am Games. We have more than 20 public swimming pools, ice skating arenas and tennis courts. Many of the recreation centres offer indoor jogging tracks, weightlifting and fitness facilities, and aerobics classes. We also have over 150 kilometres of cycling and jogging trails through the beautiful river valley. In winter, we have the Edmonton Ski Club - downhill skiing five minutes from downtown!
Edmonton is one of the most affordable cities in Canada to live in, with many high-rise apartments located downtown, and excellent public transportation to and from suburban areas.
